A Black Lives Matter Protest and a Pro-Trump Rally Clash – Erupts in…a U.S.A. Chant?

on

Over the weekend, Black Lives Matter crashed a massive pro-Trump rally.  Everyone seemed prepared for a fight.  Then, an organizer did some quick thinking.

In the beginning, the scene unfolded as we’ve seen before.  Black Lives Matter tried to yell over the Trumpers.  The pro-Trump group attempted to ignore them.

Don’t give them the spotlight, walk away! This is America, if they don’t like that, that’s their problem.

Then, Tommy Gunn, an organizer for the Trump rally, did something that many would consider unconventional.  He didn’t want to see previous violent outbreaks happen in D.C.

He took to the platform and said:

We’re going to give you two minutes of our platform to put your message out. Now whether they disagree or agree with your message is irrelevant. It’s the fact you have the right to have the message.

Both sides applauded.  Hank Newsome, the president of Black Lives Matter took to the stage.

I am an American.

He also clarified that his group was not “anti-cop”; it was “anti-bad cop”.  This contrasts cries from previous protests.  Some of which are “What do we want? Dead cops!” or “Pigs in a blanket, fry ’em like bacon.”

Newsome is an admirable member of BLM.  His views show that he has dwelled on the issues African Americans face extensively.  Having him speak was a great decision for the group.  Newsome acknowledges that black-on-black crime is a bigger issue, but he still seeks to end police corruption.

In reference to the overwhelming crime in Chicago, Newsome said:

I’m a black man. If black lives really mattered, then they need to protest in Chicago. Let’s take it to Chicago. Let’s bring everybody. We need to have a M.O.A.R. rally in Chicago with BLM.

The rest of the rally went off without a hitch.  There was obviously some disagreement, but at the end of the rally, both groups joined with each other for a particularly meaningful “U.S.A.” chant.
