WOW! Indonesian Christian governor thrown in jail for blasphemy against Islam

on

Jakarta Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, also known as Ahok, is sentenced two years in prison for being found guilty of blasphemy in a trial seen as a test of Indonesia’s religious tolerance.
Back in April, prosecutors called for the blasphemy counts to be dropped in exchange for a lesser charge of “spreading hate,” but the judges dismissed that recommendation. In December, the Chinese Christian politician was put on trial for accusations that he insulted Islam during his campaign to keep his spot, but the Jakarta Governor denied these charges.
Here’s what happened: Ahok allegedly quoted a verse from the Quran, only to prove to his supporters that there were no restrictions on Muslims voting for a non-Muslim politician. Hundreds of thousands of Muslim Indonesians protested against him on the streets of Jakarta, with many calling for his jailing, after an edited video of his speech was released.
Local Indonesian media reports that roads near the Agriculture Ministry where the verdict was due to be delivered were closed from Monday night to prepare for protests.
Many experts believe all the controversy over Ahok’s guilty verdict led to his losing his re-election as Jakarta’s governor. Ahok lost to a former Indonesian education and culture minister Anies Baswedan, who is Muslim, after a campaign that brought out major religious tension.
On the day of the election, the Jakarta Post editorial board described the campaign as the “dirtiest, most polarizing and divisive” Indonesia has ever seen.
