Michael Phelps Will Race a Shark…Seriously

This July, Michael Phelps will put his swimming to the test.  This time, he will challenge the world’s greatest swimmer: a great white shark.

The spectacle is in honor of Discovery’s hit “Shark Week”, which is set for late July.  The cable channel has dubbed it the “Great Gold vs. Great White” event.  The press release states:

“They are one of the fastest and most efficient predators on the planet: Sharks. He is our greatest champion to ever get in the water: Michael Phelps. 39 world records. 23 Olympic golds.

But he has one competition left to win. An event so monumental no one has ever attempted it before. The world’s most decorated athlete takes on the ocean’s most efficient predator: Phelps V Shark — the race is on!”

Details at this point are scarce, and that leaves the public with a lot of questions.  Will Phelps be performing freestyle or the butterfly?  Will they be swimming in the same pool?  And most importantly, who will win?

Phelps teased what viewers should expect to see on his Instagram.

“I was able to do something that I had always wanted to do.  Be in a cage and dive with great White sharks!!”

Phelps appears to be in a cage as a great white lingers just below the surface only a few inches away.

According to Discovery, the retired Olympic swimmer will also learn “how to stay calm as a hammerhead swims two feet above his face.”  This portion will serve to “dispel the myths and common misconceptions” about sharks.  It will be conducted by staffers at the Bimini Shark Lab.

Phelps will only serve as a minor cast member during “Shark Week”.

Other titles that will air include:

  • “Shark-Croc Showdown”
  • “Alien Sharks: Stranger Fins”
  • “Sharks and the City”
  • “Lair of the Sawfish”

Michael Phelps’s race is scheduled to air on Sunday, July 23 at 8:00 p.m. EST.
